Second-semester Arabic course that teaches  Modern Standard Arabic, the Egyptian and Levantine dialects, and Arab culture.

Description

Elementary Arabic 2 is designed for second-semester beginning Arabic learners who completed first-semester Arabic or its equivalent, have basic knowledge of Modern Standard Arabic, and wish to continue building their communicative competence at the elementary level in  Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and the Egyptian and/or Levantine dialects.

Using a proficiency-oriented approach, learners will

  • develop contextually-appropriate, interpersonal communication skills in both written and spoken Arabic,
  • cultivate reading, listening, and writing skills through the use of audio-visual media,
  • understand fundamental grammar,
  • acquire a wide range of vocabulary on a variety of everyday topic, and
  • gain understanding of the diversity of Arab culture.

The course structure consists of 5 theme-based, contextualized lessons that can be completed over the duration of 14 or 15 weeks. Each lesson consists of

  • A set of vocabulary accompanied by audio-visual media to facilitate learning and memorization.
  • A storytelling video of a reading (can be used for audio-visual or a reading): both  integrate the lesson’s vocabulary and grammar, aims at teaching social interactions with a focus on the lesson’s theme, and cultivates knowledge of Arab culture.
  • Watch and Speak dialogue videos shot in Egypt with Egyptian and Syrian actors to provide an authentic background. The videos are in MSA, Egyptian, and Levantine dialects, with follow-up exercises and role plays.
  • Grammar with listening, speaking and writing exercises (Multiple Choice, Drag n Drop, Matching, Dictation, etc…), games, and role plays,
  • A writing prompt,
  • Culture,
  • Music, and
  • An assessment.
