LearnLab Summer School
Build smarter online learning with data and design at the core.
The LearnLab Summer School is a week-long, in-person program hosted at Carnegie Mellon University that brings together educators, researchers, and designers to explore how learning science, data, and design can shape better learning experiences.
Held annually in late July, the program offers full-day sessions (9:00 AM – 5:00 PM ET) and is in person only.
The next session is expected in summer 2026.
Two Tracks Led by the Open Learning Initiative (OLI)
🛠️ Building Online Courses with OLI (OLI Track)
Design effective online learning experiences by aligning measurable learning outcomes with engaging course content, activities, and assessments. This track combines research-based design principles with hands-on use of the OLI platform, guiding you through both the pedagogy and the tools needed to create and improve online course modules.
📊 Educational Datamining (EDM Track)
Explore how students learn by analyzing real-world learner data. You’ll define a research question, work with datasets from LearnLab’s DataShop or your own, and apply tools like R, Weka, or TagHelper to uncover learning patterns. The track guides you through hypothesis development, hands-on analysis, and interpretation—culminating in a project presentation.
